UNL Entomologists receive recognition at Entomology meeting

The University of Nebraska Entomology Department was big winner at the National Entomological Society meeting this year.

UNL Entomology faculty, Dr. Tom Hunt and Dr. Bob Wright, were members of a group of scientists who received the 2011 Integrated Pest Management Team Award from The Entomological Foundation. This award, which recognizes the successful pest-control efforts of a small, collaborative work team which includes at least one entomologist from the private sector and one from the public sector, was presented during the 2011 Entomological Society of America annual meeting in Reno NV.

In addition,several UNL Entomology graduate and undergraduate students received recognition at the meeting held Nov. 13-16.

Entomology students receiving awards for presentations at the meeting include:

Anthony Justin McMechan, 1st place, Graduate student oral presentation
Jessica Jurzenski, 1st place, Graduate student oral presentation
Ana Maria Velez, 2nd place, Graduate Student oral presentation
Kyle Koch, 1st place, Graduate Student poster presentation
Tim Husen, 2nd place, Graduate Student poster presentation
Stephen Losey, 2nd place, Undergraduate poster presentation

UNL tied with The Ohio State University for the most student competition awards of any university at the meeting.

The UNL Linnaean Team (Lizette Dahlgren (alternate), Ken Miwa, Jessica Jurzenski, Wayne Ohnesorg, and Tim Husen, placed first in the competition, beating a team from North Carolina State University in the finals. The Linnaean Games are a quiz-bowl competition with questions from all aspects of entomology. UNL previously won the national championship in 2006.
