Midwest Queen Rearing Workshop

When: June 27-28, 2001

Where: Agricultural Research & Development Center (near Ithaca and Mead, Nebraska).

Cost: $85 per person, includes 5 meals, refreshments, successful queen rearing workbook, and cap. Pre-registration is required by June 20, 2001.

Note: The Queen Rearing program ends Thursday PM. Participants who wish to sit in on the Friday and Saturday sessions of the Master Beekeeping Workshop may do so for $20.00 per day extra to cover meals and breaks. You must register for the extra days prior to the meeting to allow time to schedule the extra meals.

Lodging: Lodging is available in Lincoln and Wahoo. A list of facilities and their rates is provided at the end of this document. A van will leave Lincoln at 7:30 AM each morning for participants staying in Lincoln who need transportation.

Program:

The program will begin at 8:30 AM each day at the ARDC Education Center (Headquarters). The schedule includes both classroom and hands-on training. The workshop is limited to 20 participants to assure that all participants have extensive hands-on opportunities. Participants should bring their own protective gear.

Participants should expect to gain the knowledge and skills needed to successfully produce queen bees.

Master Beekeeping Program

When: June 28-30, 2001

Program:

The workshop is limited to 60 participants. The program will begin at 8:30 AM each day at the ARDC Education Center. The schedule includes classroom training in the mornings followed by hands-on training in the afternoons. Hands-on sessions will be in small groups with opportunities for active participation. Participants should bring their own protective gear. Master beekeeper certificates will be awarded to participants who complete the training, demonstrate a range of practical skills, and subsequently complete the service unit requirement. A list of activities that will fulfill the service unit requirements will be provided to participants.

Directions to ARDC Education Center:

From Lincoln, take Highway 77 North to Highway 63. Turn right or East on Highway 63 and go 6.25 miles. The headquarters building is on the right or South side of the road. There is a sign at the entrance directing visitors to the parking lot. The phone number for the ARDC Research & Education Center is 402-624-8000.

The newly constructed 23,000 square foot Research and Education Building is equipped with state-of-the-art data and information transmission equipment, a computer training room, a library and laboratories. In addition, the Research and Information Building has an auditorium, conference rooms and exhibition hall to accommodate programs of 600 participants. The building is s trategically located in many diverse environments. Within walking distance, visitors can experience the dynamics of wetlands, woodlands, a stream, sub-irrigated meadows, agricultural research and production areas.

Directions to Apiculture Laboratory:

From the Research and Education Building, take Road 10 North and follow the signs directing you to the Turf grass research area. The Apiculture Lab is adjacent to the Turfgrass research plots.
