Course Description This course is designed to help students prepare high quality visuals for scientific presentations. The course also includes training in technologies that are used to find entomological information, insect photography and public speaking. This course provides a foundation in technologies that are used in distance education, and it will enhance the ability of students to complete other distance courses. Instruction is by interactive modules in which students view PowerPoint presentations with audio. The lectures can be accessed through BlackBoard and access is asynchronous so course materials are available any time of day. Throughout the lecture modules, students will follow links to more information, and they will pause to practice techniques after they are demonstrated. Instruction is reinforced by exercises and readings from selected references. Weekly assignments are used to provide students feedback on their work. Students are required to prepare a portfolio of visuals that will include a research on-screen-shows, an extension on-screen show, transparencies, and a poster. Grades will be based on the visuals portfolio, 4 on-line quizzes and homework assignments. This course is offered via distance using Blackboard. Students are expected to spend 6-9 hours per week working on assignments and to complete the course in ten weeks. Access to a computer and to the Internet are required. For Windows an operating system of Vista or newer is recommended. For Macs an operating system of OS-X or newer is recommended. Microsoft Office is the only software required and can be purchased for $9.99 from the UNL computer store. Instructors
