Professional Responsibilities and Activities:

Research:
  • Plant resistance to insects with emphasis on the Western corn rootworm.
  • Bio-assays testing the efficacy for resistance including transgenes and native genes in the Insect Genetics Laboratory

Courses taught:
  • Invasive Pests and International Trade
  • Plant Resistance to Abiotic and Biotic Stressors (Host Plant Resistance)
  • International Plant Protection

Administrative and International Experience:

Previously served as Visiting Scholar/Affiliate Professor, and Research Professor at UNL, 2009-2010. Before joining UNL, Dr Youm worked from 1990 to 2008 within centers the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). He served as Assistant Director of Research and Program Leader at the Africa Rice Center (formerly WARDA) (2004-2008).

He worked from 1990 to 2004 at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) where he held several positions including Principal Scientist (Entomology), Global Project Coordinator (Pearl Millet), Global Theme Leader (Crop Livestock Productivity and Systems Diversification), Team Leader (Pearl Millet Improvement Project), Deputy Site Leader and Country Representative (ICRISAT-Mali). During his service, he led research teams and projects on crop improvement and natural resource management that spanned Africa and Asia and developed strong relationships with regional and international scientific communities. He also has experience in the area of project and program development and management, as well as the development and management of multi-country research and development networks.

Mentored students at the BS, MS, and PhD levels and served in student advisory and/or thesis defense panels at universities including the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra Ghana; University Abdou Moumouni of Niamey, Niger; University of Abomey Calavi, Cotonou, Benin; Houphouet Boigny Polytechnic Institute, Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire; Rural Development Institute, University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Polytechnic Institute of Katibougou, Mali; and Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. He served as Graduate Faculty Member, by special appointment as external member while serving on graduate student committees at Texas A&M University (1997-2000), and served as Teaching Assistant at the Department of Animal Biology, University Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal,1980-1981.

92 publications, including 30 in Journals / research bulletins and newsletters, 4 E-research briefs, 1 co-authored book and 7 book chapters, 4 handbooks and 2 handbook chapters, 15 conferences papers (senior or co-authored), 20 abstracts, 10 leaflets and brochures and over 25 scientific presentations, seminars and lectures.
