Dr. Gary J. Brewer will be returning to UNL this fall as Head of the Entomology Department. Dr. Brewer has been at North Dakota State University since 1985 and is presently Chair of the Entomology Department at NDSU. He received his B.S. in Zoology in 1974 and his M.S. degree in Entomology in 1978, both from UNL, and his Ph.D. in Entomology from Kansas State University in 1984. Dr. John Owens, UNL Vice President and Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources stated, “The IANR Deans and I are delighted Dr. Brewer, who is an accomplished faculty member and successful academic administrator, will be joining the UNL faculty and providing leadership for one of our strongest and most successful academic departments.” Dr. Fred Baxendale has been serving as the interim department head.
Congratulations
Dr. Leon Higley has been awarded the 2006 CASNR Distinguished Teaching Award. This honor carries with it a cash award of $1,000. Leon was formally recognized and received an engraved medallion and certificate at the Recognition of Rising Scholars Honors Convocation at the Lied Center on April 23, 2006.
Dr. Tiffany Heng-Moss has been promoted to Associate Professor and granted continuous appointment (tenure). There was a celebration dinner at the Champion’s Club on April 26, 2006, honoring those being promoted and/or granted tenure.
Tim Husen was one of 3 students recognized for submitting an outstanding poster to the 2006 Research Fair Poster Competition in the Biological and Agricultural Sciences Division. He received a check for $50 and an invitation to attend the April 19, 2006 Sigma Xi Awards Banquet as a guest of the society. The title of his poster was "A Micro-Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Subterranean Termites in Nebraska."
Meeting News
The 61st Annual Meeting of the North Central Branch of ESA was held March 26-29, in Bloomington, IL. Dr. Leon Higley received the C. V. Riley Award for "outstanding contributions to the science of entomology." He was introduced by UNL Entomology graduate student, Tim Huntington.
Dr. Gary Hein was installed as the 2006-2007 NCB President. Dr. Marion Ellis will be the Program Chair for the 2007 meeting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, March 25-28. Dr. Shripat Kamble was elected as an Executive Member-at-Large of the NCB.
Dr. Shripat Kamble organized and moderated the symposium, “Urban Entomology Research and Outreach Programs in the North Central Region.”
Dr. Ken Pruess and Dr. John Foster received pins for 50 and 40 years, respectively, of membership in ESA, presented by Paula Lettice, ESA Executive Director.
The UNL Entomology Department Linnaean Team reached the finals of the NCB contest, and played an exciting final against North Dakota State University. Despite leading most of the first half of the game, Nebraska was overcome by a late surge by the NDSU team and finished as the runnerup to NDSU. Both teams will receive funding from ESA to attend compete in the Linnaean Games at the ESA meeting this December. Coaches Drs. Ken Pruess and Bob Wright were very proud of the efforts of our team-- Mike Fisher, Tim Husen, Eliseu Pereira, and Matt Brust.

Travel
Dr. Bob Wright participated in the annual meeting of the USDA-CSREES regional committee on IPM, NCR 201, on April 3, 2006 in St. Louis, MO. Bob was elected Chair-Elect of the committee.
Dr. David Carter and Tim Huntington participated in the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in Seattle, WA from February 20-25, 2006.
Faculty and graduate students participating in the 5th National IPM Symposium in St. Louis, MO on April 4-6, included Drs. John Foster, Gary Hein, Leon Higley, Phyllis Higley, Tom Hunt, Short Heinrichs, and graduate students, Tierney Brosius, Mike Fisher, Leo Magalhaes, and Sheri Svehla.
Graduate Student News
Analiza Alves received a $200 Swenk Fund Travel Support Award to attend the XXI Congresso Brasileiro de Entomologia in Recife, Brazil, August 6-11, 2006. Analiza was also awarded $500 in travel funds from the Initiative for Ecological and Evolutionary Analysis (IEEA) at UNL.
Tierney Brosius and Sheri Svehla were each awarded $150 from the Swenk Fund to attend the S-1010 Meetings in St. Louis, MO, April 1-5, 2006.
Mathew Brust, Michael Fisher, Tim Husen, and Eliseu Pereira each received a $200 Swenk Fund Travel Support Award to attend the NCB ESA Meeting in Bloomington, IL on March 26-29, 2006. Upeka Samarakoon, Rosana Serikawa, and Bea Siriwetwiwat were each awarded $150 to attend the NCB ESA Meeting.
Newly elected Bruner Club Officers are: President - Analiza Alves, Vice President - Laura Campbell, Secretary - Andrea Gutsche, Treasurer - Chelsey Wasem, and Student Representative - Nick Aliano. Dr. Blair Siegfried was elected as the faculty representative/advisor.
