New Distance Master Students: Fall 2004: Kimberly M. Skyrm, Statesboro, GA; Richard D. Spigler, Nottingham, MD.
Leonardo Magalhães is a new masters student from São Paulo, Brazil. Leo received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Drs. Tom Hunt and Blair Siegfried will be Leo’s advisors.
Elizabeth Rieke is working towards her masters degree under the supervision of Drs. Mary Liz Jameson and Brett Ratcliffe. Elizabeth, who is from Lincoln, NE, graduated from UN-L this past spring with a B.S. in Biological Sciences.
Sophie Rochefort, a Ph.D. student from Laval University, Québec, Canada, is visiting Dr. Fred Baxendale’s laboratory from September through mid-November. Sophie will be spending time in the field and laboratory learning new research techniques and methodologies related to turfgrass entomology in Nebraska. She will also continue her research on identifying and characterizing the Collembolla and ground beetles associated with turfgrasses in Canada. In return, Sophie will share her knowledge of turfgrass endophytes and their detection with students and other interested individuals.
Sajeewani ‘Upeka’ Samarakoon, a Fulbright Grant recipient from Sri Lanka, is working towards a M.S. degree under the supervision of Dr. John Foster. Upeka received her B.S. degee in Zoology from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka.
Rosana Serikawa, who was a visiting student from Brazil during the fall of 2003, has returned to pursue a M.S. degree under the supervision of Dr. John Foster. Rosana received her B.S. degree in Agronomy from the Universidade Estadual Paulista.
Aaron Smith has begun working towards his M.S. degree under the supervision of Drs. Mary Liz Jameson and Brett Ratcliffe. Aaron received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin.
Abby Stilwell, from Casper, WY, is pursuing a masters degree with Drs. Tom Hunt and Bob Wright as her advisors. Abby received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Wyoming.

Dr. Odair Fernandes is now Chair of the Graduate Committee of Agricultural Entomology for the Department of Plant Protection at Paulista State University, Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brazil. There are approximately 30 students in the program now which is 16 years old and has both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Odair received his Ph.D. from UN-L in 1995 under the supervision of Drs. Z B Mayo and Bob Wright.
Dr. Earle Raun will be bestowed the title of 2004 Honorary Fellow of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) at the ESA Annual Meeting this coming November. Earle served as Chair of the Entomology Department from 1966 to 1971.
Dr. Scott Hutchins has been elected as Vice President-Elect of the ESA. Scott is Global Director of Pest Management R&D for Dow AgroSciences in Indianapolis, IN. and has an adjunct appointment in the Entomology Department.
Dr. David Isenhour of Monsanto Company in DeKalb, IL, has been designated to the Graduate Faculty of UN-L. David has an adjunct appointment in the Department of Entomology.
The Entomology Department is pleased to announce three new future entomologists: Trevor Jon Darnell, son of C.J. and Stephanie Darnell, born July 18, weighing in at 8 lbs., 9oz., and 19 inches long; Belén Victoria, daughter of Victoria and Fede Ocampo, born July 30, weighing 6 lbs., 3 oz., and 19½ inches long; and Emma Marie Moss, daughter of Mike and Tiffany Heng-Moss, born August 18, weighing 7 lbs., 11 oz., and 19 ½ inches long.
Graduate Student News
Nicholas Aliano and Wyatt Anderson, who received their M.S. Degrees in Entomology in August, have started their Ph.D. programs this fall. Dr. Marion Ellis will continue as Nick’s advisor, and Drs. Fred Baxendale and Tiffany Heng-Moss will be Wyatt’s advisors.
Shauna Hawkins has received an Ernst Myer Travel Grant for Animal Systematics for $1,085 from the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard for travel to European museums to study type specimens.
Nick Aliano and Paul Timm each received a $2,000 scholarship from the foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, a charitable education foundation sponsored by the American Beekeeping Federation.
Jeff Krumm has been selected to receive a Widaman Trust Distinguished Graduate Assistant Award in the amount of $2,000.
Nick Aliano and Paul Nabity were each awarded a Farmers National Company Fellowship for 2004-2005, in the amount of $2,000.
