Insecticides for Control of Mites in Dry Beans

Updated March 11, 2003 by Gary Hein and John Thomas

Economic Threshold:
Mites seldom reach levels significant enough to justify treatments, and when they do, serious infestations are limited to borders or patches. Spot or border treatments would be most economical. Consider the yellowing caused by mite feeding to be similar to defoliation and use defoliation thresholds to determine the potential for impact on the beans. During vegetative growth stages, the level of defoliation that will result in economic losses ranges from 25-40%. For reproductive stages (flowering and pod fill), economic losses would be expected if defoliation exceeds 5-15%.
