Insecticide Treatment Options for Control of Sugarbeet Root Maggot

Updated March 12, 2003 by Gary Hein and John Thomas

Economic Threshold:
Serious infestations of sugarbeet root maggots are difficult to control. Growers should monitor the potential for problems by using the orange sticky stake trapping method. Planting time or cultivation applications of soil insecticides should be used in fields with high risk of infestations. Layby applications (Lorsban 4E only) can be used to control moderate populations and to supplement planting time control for severe infestations. Layby treatments should be timed based on trapping from the orange sticky stake. Control of adult populations with broadcast treatments will reduce adult populations for a few days, but has never been shown to be economical.
