Insecticides for Control of Grasshoppers in Sunflower

Economic Threshold:
Infestations of 8 or more grasshoppers per square yard within the field, or 20 or more in the field margins are considered to be of economic importance. Sunflowers are quite tolerant to defoliation damage. During vegetative growth stages, the level of defoliation that will result in economic losses varies from 80% (V1-V3) to 50% (V12). For reproductive stages (R1-R7), economic loses would be expected if defoliation reaches 20-30% for R3 to R4 and 35-50% defoliation for remaining reproductive stages. To avoid reaching these economically damaging levels, treatments should be initiated when defoliation is about half of these defoliation levels and insects are expected to continue to actively feed.
