Insecticides for Spotted Stem Weevil Control in Sunflowers

Updated May 5, 2006 by Gary Hein and John Thomas

Economic Threshold:
Treat to control the adult weevils when sampling during the 8 to 14-leaf stage (about in early July) reveals one adult weevil per two to three plants. Sampling for adults is extremely difficult. If sampling at the end of the season shows a threshold level of 25-30 larvae per stalk (less for small stalks), a planting time treatment or adult sampling the following year in adjacent fields should be considered.
