Most Abundant Insect

On some warm summer nights, you might think mosquitos are the most abundant insects, but the honor goes to an East African group of termites called Macrotermes.

The queen is big; the one below is about 8 cm, but they can grow over 4 inches (10 cm) long! She can lay an egg every 2 seconds for a total of 43,000 eggs per day!  That is almost 16 million eggs per year!!!!!  A termite queen can live for many years.
