Order
Hemiptera: Heteroptera
Perhaps the most distinctive
feature of the Heteroptera is the structure of the front wings. The
basal half of the front wing is thickened and leathery while the apical
half is membranous. This type of wing is called a hemelytron.
The hind wings are entirely membranous. At rest, the wings lay
flat over the abdomen with the apical portions of the front wings
overlapping. Hemipterans have piercing-sucking mouthparts that
originate from the front of the head and are usually directed back
towards the body. They also have well-developed antennae and
compound eyes.
