Meet Sam Babcock - Student Spotlight

February 1, 2025

Samuel Babcock
Meet Sam Babcock, an insect science undergraduate student from Waverly, NE.

Name: Samuel Babcock

Hometown: Waverly, NE

Major(s): Insect Science

Expected Date of Graduation: May, 2027

Why did you choose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I grew up in this area and have always looked forward to attending UNL because I knew of their Insect Science program and valued the ability to stay near where I was from. I have also enjoyed many experiences growing up that were organized by the university and other affiliated teams like Extension and wanted to be a part of that structure.

Why did you decide to major in Insect Science? What is your favorite thing about this major?

I have always enjoyed being outdoors and exploring nature and its many parts, but when I took a 4-H class through my local Extension, I found a specific interest in insects and the roles they play. Just being able to be a part of an academic group that shares my specific interest is my favorite part of this major.

What is your favorite class you have taken so far and why?

My favorite class has been ENTO116. I enjoyed creating my collection and growing my knowledge of identification when I took the class, and then I was able to later assist as a TA in the class and teach the same things I had been excited about when I took the class myself.

Are you involved in any clubs/organizations at UNL?

I am heavily involved as a leader in a Christian college ministry RSO hosted by my church here in town which also includes all the college campuses here in Lincoln.

What are your plans after graduation?

As of now, I don’t have any plans for after graduation. I could consider going on to grad school or finding a career in many areas within entomology, or even in other areas.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy being outside and pursuing my hobby of nature photography, which includes a lot of insects but also various other things. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, and playing games of all types (board games, video games, intramurals).
