Name: Sam Spencer
Hometown: Bedford, NH
Major(s): Insect Science
Expected Date of Graduation: May 2025
Why did you choose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
I actually came here specifically for the Insect Science program. I applied to most of the schools on ESA’s list of universities with undergraduate insect science programs
Why did you decide to major in Insect Science? What is your favorite thing about this major?
I’ve had a longstanding interest in animals, and that crystallized into an interest in insects in my early teens.
What is your favorite class you have taken so far and why?
I took Predator Ecology (BIOS 453) at Cedar Point, which wins mostly for its in-the-field structure. If I limit it to classes taken on campus I have to give it to Biology and Classification of Insects (ENTO 400).
Are you involved in any clubs/organizations at UNL?
Currently, no. I’ve been active in clubs in the past, and I was even an officer for the undergraduate Insect Science Club, but currently I want to focus more on my academics for my senior year.
What are your plans after graduation?
I’m looking for jobs in the field. I’ve had past work experience in parks, museum collections, labs, and conservation, and I’d want to do more in any or all of those .
What do you like to do in your free time?
I really like the fantasy genre. I read fantasy books, I play fantasy video games, my friends and I meet for Dungeons and Dragons every week. I like learning about the world, and fantasy creates a whole new one to learn about alongside our own.
