Entomology students win awards at ESA 2021

Entomology Students at ESA conferenceCongratulations to Entomology Department students (and their mentors) who successfully presented papers & posters at the Entomological Society of America (ESA) conference Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in Denver, CO! The students took home five 1st place awards, two 2nd place awards, and the ESA Student Activity Award. 

Student award winners were:

  • Sajjan Grover, student activity award (mentored by Dr. Joe Louis);
  • Juan Betancurt Cardona, 1st place 10-minute paper in the P-IE Host-Plant Resistance category, graduate-student level (mentored by Dr. Joe Louis);
  • Ravneet Kaur, 1st place 10-minute paper in the P-IE: IPM (Integrated Pest Mgt)-General category, graduate level (mentored by Drs. Ana Velez and Justin McMechan);
  • Hannah Stowe, 1st place 10-minute paper in the P-IE: Biocontrol - Predators, Plant-Insect Ecosystems, presenting her master's work from Kansas State University (currently in the Ph.D. entomology program at UNL and mentored by Dr. Julie Peterson)
  • Natasha Umezu, 1st place in-person graduate-student poster in the P-IE: IPM 1 - Field Crops, General, and Horticulture (mentored by Dr. Justin McMechan);
  • Joana Schroeder DeSouza, 1st place in-person undergraduate student poster  in the P-IE: Ecology, Conservation, and Pest Management category, (mentored by Dr. Justin McMechan);
  • Jeff Cluever, 2nd place 10-minute in-person graduate student paper in the P-IE: Biocontrol - Parasitoids category (mentored by Drs. Jeff Bradshaw and Bob Wright); and
  • Ellis Johnson, 2nd place virtual graduate-student poster in the MUVE and PBT: Forensic Entomology, Toxicology, and Other (mentored by Dr. Troy Anderson).
