Congratulations to Dr. Justin McMechan, assistant professor of Entomology, who was recognized as a 2023 recipient of the Ag Research Division's (ARD) Junior Faculty for Excellence in Research Award. McMechan works in Crop Protection and Cropping Systems with the Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

In 2016, McMechan graduated with a Ph.D. in Entomology and a Doctor of Plant Health Degree from UNL. Both degrees involved multidisciplinary research, and he has made it a fundamental part of his research program at UNL, according to his nominator. His lab's research is focused on estimating the impact of cover crop management tactics on pest and beneficial arthropods, evaluating hail damage in row crops, and understanding emerging problems such as ear development issues in corn. He is also working on emerging issues with a newly-discovered insect pest, the soybean gall midge.

The goal of this award
is to recognize outstanding trajectories of junior faculty and to aid in building strong portfolios for promotion and tenure.  Early-career awards serve as important building blocks for regional and national awards later in a career.
