Name: Kashish Verma

Hometown: Panchkula, Haryana, India

Graduate Program: M.S. in Entomology

Expected Date of Graduation: December 2024

Why did you choose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

In my third year of undergraduate studies, I made the decision to pursue a master’s degree in entomology, with a particular interest in gaining research and cultural experience in the United States. During my search for entomology labs across the U.S., a friend and former classmate recommended that I contact Dr. Joe Louis at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I was immediately drawn to the work being conducted in his lab. Fortunately, he was looking for new students, and after an online meeting with him, I was given the opportunity to join his lab, which marked the beginning of my enriching journey at UNL.

Why did you decide to pursue a Graduate Degree? Why entomology?

I have always been passionate about contributing to society, specifically the farmers’ community, by addressing critical challenges they face in the fields. This led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Science, where I developed a profound interest in entomology. As I delved deeper into the significant impact of insect pests on crops, I became convinced that pursuing a graduate degree in entomology and furthering my knowledge in this area would enable me to make a meaningful contribution to making agricultural practices more sustainable.

What is your favorite class you have taken so far and why?

My favorite class so far has been Presentation Methods with Dr. Doug Golick. This course has been incredibly valuable in helping me refine my presentation and communication skills with a strong focus on understanding and engaging with my audience. The practical tips and techniques I've learned have been immensely helpful, and I always apply them when I prepare posters or presentations. I would recommend this class to everyone.

What is the topic of your thesis/project? What interested you in this topic?

My research focuses on plant-insect interactions, specifically studying the dynamics between sugarcane aphids and sorghum. I am investigating how modifications in lignin composition can influence sorghum's resistance to sugarcane aphids. Host plant resistance is a complex and often underexplored field, particularly when it comes to understanding interactions between monocot crops and herbivorous insects. What drew me to this topic is its potential to contribute to sustainable pest management. By exploring sorghum resistance, we hope to provide insights that could be incorporated into breeding programs to develop more resistant cultivars, ultimately enhancing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for sugarcane aphid control.

What are your plans after graduation?

Upon completion of my MS, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in the same field (plant-insect interactions). My goal is to contribute to research focused on improving crop resistance and advancing sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, I want to acquire expertise in science communication to extend scientific knowledge to a broader audience.

What do you like to do in your free time? Are you involved in any clubs/organizations on campus?

During my free time, I enjoy working out, practicing yoga, painting, and spending time by the lake. I also love catching up with family and friends whenever I can. On campus, I am involved in the Bruner Entomology Club and occasionally participate in events organized by the Indian Students' Association (ISA) and the International Student Fellowship (ISF).
