Insect Biology
(BIOS/ENTO 115)

This course focuses on fundamental insect biology (anatomy, development, physiology, behavior, ecology and diversity), the economic and medical importance of insects and principles of insect pest management. This 3.0 credit hour course is an ACE 4 Science and is offered every Fall and Spring semester both in-person and online.

Science and Decision-Making for a Complex World (SCIL 101)

This course offers an introduction to the scientific, social, economic, political and cultural dimensions of current issues related to food, energy, water and landscape systems. Accessing and evaluating popular and scientific media, and engaging in science-informed decision-making is a critical skill that employers today want in their employees. This 3.0 credit hour course is an ACE 8 Civic/Ethics/Stewardship and is offered every Fall and Spring semester in-person.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Experiential learning for career development in insect science provides students experiences in the application and integration of the Insect Science curriculum within the context of extension and service, research, or teaching experience. Opportunities are diverse. Some examples include:

  • Learning Assistant for Insect Biology (BIOS/ENTO115): Gain teaching experience, develop teaching assessment skills, support active learning and develop your own teaching philosophy in the Department of Entomolgy's freshman level insect biology course.
  • Teaching Assistant's Assistant for Insect Identification (BIOS/ENTO 116): Gain teaching experiences, support student learning and reflect on your teaching philosophy and style in the Department of Entomology's freshman level insect identification lab. 
  • Tick Tag Go Extension or Research Assistant: Gain extension experience, explore citizen science as a research and education model, help develop and enact tick-related educational program, develop an understanding of tick biology, and support one health initiatives related to ticks in the state of Nebraska.
  • Citizen Scientists of Nebraska Extension Assistant: Gain extension experience, develop outreach and educational materials to promote public engagement in Nebraska-based citizen science programs, gain an understanding of the research, educational and social benefits of citizen science.
